ABCD English

Improve and practice your and your child’s English before they start kindergarten at ABCD English! 

Through a range of guided activities, using talking, singing, reading and play, these sessions help develop confidence and language skills in young children who are new to speaking in English.

These sessions assist families to improve and practice English in a fun educational environment.

Upcoming sessions

Sessions run for 8 weeks during school term. Term 2 sessions run between Monday 29 April 2024 to Friday 21 June 2024.

ABCD English Registration

Please let us know your library membership number. If you don't have one please ask us about joining!
Please tell us how long you and your family have been in Australia.
Please tell us the name of the child you wish to attend ABCD English with. This can be their preferred name.
ABCD English is designed for children aged 3-5. If your child is younger than 3, we encourage them to attend our Play or Rhymes sessions.
Please enter your child's date of birth.
Please let us know if you have attended LETS at any library in Western Australia.

General Information

  • Registrations for this free program are essential due to limited number of spots available.
  • Please be mindful of others and arrive on time to have your name marked off.
  • This session is for 3-5 year old children only. If you have additional younger children please find alternative arrangements or consider the wonderful low cost creche located in the Leisureplex complex. Visit the creche page for more information.
  • ABCD English will run for 9 weeks during school term and children will receive a certificate on completion.

What will we do at ABCD English?

ABCD English is an interactive program involving lots of talking, singing, reading and craft. Parents (or a caregiver) are taking part in the program with their children.

How long is ABCD English?

Sessions run for 1 hour. Participants are asked to arrive 15 minutes early to check-in. Once checked in, families enjoy shared reading time until the session starts. 

How many sessions can we attend?

Each child is able to attend 9 sessions before joining our mainstream storytime program. A staff member will mark your names off on arrival. After nine sessions, your child will receive a certificate and is encouraged to attend Storytime sessions.

Do I need to know any English to take part in the program?

It is recommended that the caregiver or parent speak some English.

How old should my child be to take part in ABCD English?

ABCD English is designed for ages 3-5 years. Children must participate with a caregiver or parent.

My child is too young?

If your child is younger than 3, we encourage them to attend our Rhymes sessions.

Where is ABCD English held?

ABCD English is run at Cannington Library located at 233 Sevenoaks Street, Cannington WA 6107.

When is ABCD English held?

ABCD English is run only during the school term on Thursday. Sign-in is from 9.45 and the session runs from 10.00 -11.00 am.

Can I bring more than one child?

Sessions are best with one on one interactions between parent/caregiver and the registered child. This enables participants to gain the most from the experience. Please arrange alternate childcare for siblings.

Do I need to register?

Yes, you must register online before attending the program. Registrations can be made by visiting the ABCD English Registration page. Soon after you register online, you will be contacted with information about your start date.
