Reconciliation

Strengthening relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

At its heart, reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians (sourced from Reconciliation Australia).

The City of Canning is committed to reconciliation. Our vision for reconciliation is one of unity and equity, built on genuine relationships with, and respect for, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

New Reconciliation Strategy and Action Plan

The City has developed a new Reconciliation Strategy that will guide our reconciliation actions for the next four years.

The City’s Journey with Reconciliation

In 2018, the City developed and delivered its first Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (PDF 2.2MB). Some of our reconciliation achievements include:

  • Developing relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and organisations.
  • Employment of an Aboriginal Engagement Officer.
  • Delivery of ‘Ngalang Kadjin Moorditj’ (Our Spirit Strong) Aboriginal youth and employment mentoring program.
  • Continual delivery of annual NAIDOC and Reconciliation Week events and annual Noongar language classes.
  • Noongar naming across City building’s meeting rooms and the installation of door wraps featuring artworks commissioned from Sister Kate’s Home Kids Aboriginal Corporation.
  • Installation of acknowledgement plaques on the exterior of City buildings.

Canning Reconciliation Action Group

The City of Canning has convened a Reconciliation Action Group to guide our reconciliation work. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians are welcomed to join. The group meets once every two months.

Nominations will be opening in May for new members. If you would like to express an interest to join please contact community@canning.wa.gov.au. For more information, download the Terms of Reference (PDF 400KB).
