Queens Park Open Space
Queens Park Open Space Construction: Transforming Community Spaces for a Brighter Future.
The City of Canning has secured $5.3 million in grant funding from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, and the Arts through the Priority Community Infrastructure Programme. This substantial contribution from the Federal Government, together with funding from WA Cricket and support from the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund, marks a significant milestone towards bringing the Queens Park Open Space masterplan to life.
Alongside the City of Canning’s commitment, we are moving forward with the transformation of Queens Park into a vibrant recreational and sporting hub, situated adjacent to the impressive Sam Kerr Football Centre.
Project Milestones and Community Engagement
In September 2024, the Council approved the construction tender awarded to Phase 3 Landscape Construction. This essential step brings us closer to realising a state-of-the-art facility designed with the community’s needs in mind.
Community engagement has been central to shaping this masterplan, ensuring that the open space aligns with local aspirations while preserving and enhancing the natural environment. Through collaboration with residents and stakeholders, we have developed a plan that combines recreational spaces, sporting facilities, and environmental features to benefit the local and regional communities for years to come.
Masterplan Highlights
The masterplan for Queens Park Open Space includes:
- Two new football pitches to support the growing community of football enthusiasts.
- Cricket facilities, including a wicket and enclosed practice nets.
- Play and fitness areas, featuring a pump track, half basketball court, and district-level playground.
- Biodiversity and accessibility enhancements that preserve natural bushland, improve pathways, and ensure safe access with lighting and upgraded trails.
These features are part of a vision that promotes physical activity, nurtures biodiversity, and provides educational opportunities about the local environment
Community Benefits
The Queens Park Open Space redevelopment will greatly benefit the local are, working towards:
- Enhanced Recreational and Fitness Opportunities: Modern facilities will cater to a wide range of sporting and leisure activities.
- Environmental Protection: A biodiversity network will safeguard native flora and fauna.
- Community Well-being and Economic Uplift: Improved open spaces will encourage social interaction, recreation, and local economic activity, creating a dynamic destination for residents and visitors alike.
Looking Ahead
As we embark on this journey, we are excited about the positive impact the Queens Park Open Space and Sam Kerr Football Centre will have on our community. With continued collaboration and support, we are confident that Maniana Park will thrive as a dynamic hub for recreation, sport, and community engagement.
Works are scheduled to commence in January 2025.
