Seniors Week
From 10 to 17 November, join the City of Canning in celebrating WA Seniors Week in style, with a range of exciting free events and activities.
Acknowledging the City’s Age Friendly Plan 2024 – 2026, Seniors Week promotes the celebration and recognition of older adults within the City of Canning, creating a positive image of ageing and promoting intergenerational and intercultural understanding and respect within the community.
Seniors Week program
The free events during Seniors Week include free entry to the City’s Cannington and Riverton Leisureplexes, including a free Zumba Gold exercise class, when seniors present their WA Seniors Card.
Other active events include organised walks, Dragon Boating, Chair Yoga and the Have a Go Day.
Educational classes focus on topics that seniors have communicated are important to them, including Digital Learning for Seniors, where you can learn more about online shopping, online banking, email usage, and popular applications like instant translation.
Other educational events include Internet Safety for Computers and Smartphones, AI and Chat GPT for Seniors, and an Empowering Health workshop about hydration, balanced meals, bone health, cognitive nutrition, heart health and immune support.
Residents are encouraged to try out their local Seniors Club - Herald Ave Seniors Centre, Queens Park Seniors Club, Rostrata Family and Neighbourhood Centre, Indian Community Seniors Group, and WA Chinese Seniors Association, Connect with new friends and try some fun activities at low cost.
With so much to see and do, there's something for all seniors at Seniors’ Week in the City of Canning.

Monday 11 November
- Westfield Carousel Mall Walking Club – 8.30am at Jamaica Blue, inside the Carousel shopping Centre. Learn more.
- Digital Learning for Seniors – 10am to 11am at Hillview Intercultural Community Centre. Empower yourself in the digital age with our series of digital learning classes. In these sessions, we’ll guide you through the essentials of online shopping, online banking, email usage, and popular applications like instant translation. Join us in this educational journey, and let’s explore the digital world together while ensuring your safety every step of the way. Learn more.

- Remembrance Day Ceremony – Attend the RSL WA Service. 11am to lunch at Canning Districts Sub Branch RSL, 162 Wharf Street, Cannington. Featuring lunch, brass band, and bagpipes. Learn more.
Tuesday 12 November
- Nature Walk with Hike West and Birdlife WA – 8am at Canning River Eco Education Centre, Kent Street Weir. Join us for a leisurely 4km walk starting from the Kent Street Weir and encompassing a broad range of ecosystems including meandering over sedge meadows, through mature woodlands, over creeks and amongst the crowns of a paperbark forest. Please arrive 15 minutes before to complete registrations. Bookings essential via community@canning.wa.gov.au. Optional stay on for the TriShaw rides by Cycling Without Age.
- Dive into AI and ChatGPT basics – Learn interactions, applications, unleash creativity and elevate your communication. Midday to 1pm at Riverton Library. Book your ticket.
- Zumba Gold class – from 1pm at Riverton Leisureplex. Free for seniors. Book a spot.
- Internet Safety for Computer and Smart Phones for Seniors – Learn how to securely browse, protect personal data, passwords and navigate safely online on computers and smartphones. 1.30pm to 2.30pm at Riverton Library. Book your ticket.
- Grandparents Storytime – 9.30am to 10.30am at Riverton Library.
Wednesday 13 November
- Have a Go Day – free Expo for over 50s at Burswood Park, 9am to 3pm. Learn more about expo.
- Forget Me Not Memory Café – a social café for people living with dementia and carer support network at Riverton Library, 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Bookings via FMNcafe@outlook.com
- Grandparents Storytime – 9.30am to 10.30am at Cannington Library.
Thursday 14 November
- Empowering Health: Nutrition Essentials Workshop for Healthy Ageing – Learn about hydration, balanced meals, bone health, cognitive nutrition, heart health, immune support. 10am to 11am at Willetton Library. Book your ticket.
- Come and Try Mahjong – 1pm to 3pm at Hillview Intercultural Community Centre. Friendship, fellowship, and fun for active retirees. Chinese Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, calculation, and, to a certain degree, luck! If you have been looking for mates to play Mahjong, come join us for this intriguing brain game. Community Grants Program
Eligible individuals or community groups can apply for a small and volunteer grant each year. Whether you want to host an event or upskill your volunteers, the City has $500 per grant category you can apply for.

Pride Housing Project
Do you want to be part of an intergenerational project addressing social isolation and loneliness, while providing secure and affordable housing to students? GRAI are doing this by pairing LGBTQIA+ students with older (50+) LGBTQIA+ people for mutually beneficial housing.
