Union coverage update 23 January 2024 – CFMEUW, ASU & LGRCEU

Following the transition of local governments from the Federal system to the State system of industrial relations (effective 1 January 2023), employees across local governments have been approached by the CFMEUW about joining the union.  We have had some questions about this so, in the interests of transparency, we will outline the situation as we understand it for you.

Historically, two unions (the ASU and LGRCEU) have had membership coverage over local government employees in WA.  Which industries are included for potential for membership coverage for unions is governed by each unions’ rules which set out in the industries and/or occupations a union can cover and the different employee groups that are eligible to enrol as members.  Recently, the CFMEUW has increased its interest in local governments in WA and the ASU and LGRCEU have asked the WA Industrial Relations Commission (WAIRC) to decide whether the CFMEUW also has the right to offer membership to local government employees going forward.  Information provided to the City indicates that this matter won’t be resolved by the WAIRC until well into 2024.

Where can I find the City’s current Enterprise Agreement?

The current Agreement can be found on the Western Australian Industrial Commission (WAIRC) website.
