Leisureplex refurbishments set to start in February
In February 2025, the City of Canning will commence renovations to the Cannington and Riverton Leisureplexes, making major improvements to the popular community facilities that welcome over 1.5 million visitors per year.
These will be the first major renovations for the leisure centres, which are now almost 25 years old, and will ensure that our centres retain their position as modern and welcoming fitness and recreational centres that serve City of Canning residents and visitors.
The works are expected to run from February through to September, and the City will endeavour to keep disruptions to services and customers to a minimum.
Areas affected by the renovations
Riverton Leisureplex
- The Wellness Suite will be closed from 3 February to September. During this time, we will be replacing tiling, grouting, spa blowers and jets in the spa pool, and the program pool filter and liner. We will also be refurbishing the Accessibility changerooms and installing a new, improved HVAC system.
- The Aquatics Women’s and Family changerooms will be closed from 3 February to September for major renovations, including the addition of a new family/accessibility changeroom, showers and change cubicles. Customers can use the changerooms at the gym, Bill Cole Function Centre and F.I.I.T. Factory.
Cannington Leisureplex
- The Male, Female and Accessible Changerooms adjacent to the pool will be closed from 3 February to July for refurbishment, including the installation of new showers and toilet cubicles. Due to this the Wellness suite will be closed during the week, but will reopen for limited use from Fridays at 4pm to Sundays at 6pm. Customers can use the toilets and changerooms located at the gym.
- The Concourse area on northern side of the 25-metre pool, from the accessible changerooms to the end of the pool, will be boarded up and access will be limited as we refurbish the tiled wall that had sustained water damage.

FAQs
The works form part of the City’s asset renewal program. The Leisure Centres are approaching 25 years of age and require a fair amount of renovation work to keep them at a standard expected by the community. We understand there will be an inconvenience, but we are ultimately working to improve the experience for our customers. We appreciate your patience and support during this time.
We will have alternative changerooms and toilet facilities at both our venues. These may require a short walk. We will have signage up at our venues to direct you to the alternative changerooms / toilets.
While the Program Pool at Riverton is closed, all parent and baby classes (Little Water Bubs to Tots 2) will be relocated to the Leisure Pool. Rest assured, the Leisure Pool will be kept at a comfortable, warm temperature for the classes (33 degrees). Closer to the date, the exact location of your swimming lesson will be available through the online parent portal.
Although the Wellness Suites will be closed for a period of time, we will have some water-based exercise options for you.
Riverton Leisureplex
The Leisure Pool will have a walking lane open, as well as the spa area and the rapid river. The pool temperature will be 33 degrees and the water depth is 1m, suitable for water walking. Beach entry and step entry access is available into the Leisure Pool.
Our 50-metre pool has an exercise lane, as well as slow, medium and fast lanes. The pool temperature will be 28 degrees and water depth is 1.2m – 1.5m, with the step entry or use of the pool pod available to enter the 50m pool.
Cannington Leisureplex
We will have walking and lap lanes in both the 25-metre and the Leisure pools. The temperature of the 25-metre pool is 28 degrees, while the Leisure Pool is 33 degrees.
Please note that the Wellness Suite at Cannington Leisureplex will be closed during the week, but will reopen from 4pm on Fridays until 6pm on Sundays.
We understand that some disruptions are unavoidable. That’s why affected members can temporarily suspend their membership at no cost. If you’d like to adjust your membership, simply email leisureplex@canning.wa.gov.au.
Otherwise, we hope you enjoy utilising everything else the Leisureplex has to offer! This could be a great opportunity to try a new yoga or group fitness class, or focus on different workouts using the Technogym App, which you can use to work out at home or with our connected gym equipment.
Pool Access Options
We appreciate your patience while we upgrade our Wellness Suites at both Leisureplexes, which will reopen in September. In the meantime, here’s how you can continue enjoying our pools.
For Direct Debit Members
Fitness Plus, Leisureplex Plus and Aquatic members: your membership includes pool and Wellness Suite access, but with the Wellness Suite closed, you may find these alternatives helpful:
- Casual Pool Entry – $7.40 per visit
- 10-Pass Pool Entry – $49.50 (only $4.95 per visit)
If you primarily use the pool, a 10-pass may be a more cost-effective option during this period. Fitness Plus and Leisureplex Plus membership holders can also elect to change their membership type to Fitness only and purchase the suitable pool option.
For 12-Month Aquatic Membership Holders
If you hold a 12-month membership, there is no downgrade option, but you can:
- Suspend your membership for up to seven months and pay casual pool entry fees ($7.40 per visit) or purchase a 10-pass ($49.50, reducing your per-visit cost to $4.95). For further information relating to changing or cancelling your membership please see our Direct Debit Membership FAQs.
- Continue using your membership for regular pool access.
We understand these adjustments may not be ideal, and we appreciate your flexibility. Our goal is to ensure you can still make the most of your membership while we enhance our facilities. If you’d like to discuss your options, our team is happy to assist.
There may be some noise resulting from demolition and general construction during the renovation period. We will provide further details of when these works will be occurring.
We invite you to join our mailing list to keep updated with our Leisureplex services, events and more.
The City will send out regular communication to keep customers informed of the progress of the works, including current and pending closures. Please keep an eye on your emails, as well as social media and the screens at our venues to stay up to date.
Wellness Suite will be available 4pm Fridays – 6pm Sunday
During renovations you are welcome to make use of the Wellness Suite at Cannington Leisureplex from 4pm Fridays – 6pm Sunday.
Rehab and Recovery Alternatives While the Wellness Suite is Closed
If you rely on the Wellness Suite for rehabilitation, relaxation, or recovery, there are still plenty of great ways to continue your wellness routine:
- Water-Based Rehab: The Leisure Pool remains open, offering aqua walking, gentle swimming, and hydrotherapy movements to support joint health and recovery. Walking lanes are available in 25m and 50m pools.
- Yoga and Pilates Classes: Improve flexibility, core strength, and balance with low-impact movement tailored to rehabilitation needs.
- Stretch and Mobility Classes: These classes focus on gentle stretching, breathing, and muscle activation, perfect for post-injury recovery.
- Technogym App Rehab Workouts: Access guided mobility, stretching, and rehab-friendly workouts from home or use Technogym’s connected equipment at our gym. Please check with staff regarding app access with your membership.
- Low-Impact Gym Options: Consider using the treadmill or recumbent bike for circulation improvement or try foam rolling and self-massage techniques to relieve muscle tension.
Even with the Wellness Suite temporarily closed, there are many ways to stay active, recover, and improve your well-being. We encourage you to explore these alternatives and make the most of everything the Leisureplex has to offer!
We appreciate your patience as we work to enhance your experience. Thank you for being part of our Leisureplex community – we can’t wait to unveil these fantastic upgrades!
