Leisureplex refurbishments set to start in February
In February 2025, the City of Canning will commence renovations to the Cannington and Riverton Leisureplexes, making major improvements to the popular community facilities that welcome over 1.5 million visitors per year.
These will be the first major renovations for the leisure centres, which are now over 20 years old, and will ensure that our centres retain their position as modern and welcoming fitness and recreational centres that serve City of Canning residents and visitors.
The works are expected to run from February through to September, and the City will endeavour to keep disruptions to services and customers to a minimum.
Areas affected by the renovations
Cannington Leisureplex
- Wellness Suite – closed from 3 February to 31 July for refurbishments.
- Male, Female and Accessible Changerooms adjacent to the pool – closed from 3 February to 31 July.
- Customers can use the toilets and changerooms located at the gym.
- Concourse area on northern side of the 25-metre pool from accessible changeroom to end of 25-metre pool: limited access due to demolition works and refurbishment.
Riverton Leisureplex
- Wellness Suite – closed from 3 February to mid-June for refurbishments and installation of new HVAC system.
- Access to the gym changerooms will also be closed. Customers can use the changerooms at the pool deck and at the Bill Cole Function Centre.
- Women’s and Family changerooms – closed from 3 February to mid-May for major renovations.
- Customers can use the changerooms at the Bill Cole Function Centre.
Why is the City embarking on these renovations?
The works form part of the City’s asset renewal program. The Leisure Centres are approaching 25 years of age and require a fair amount of renovation work to keep them at a standard expected by the community. We understand there will be an inconvenience, but we are ultimately working to improve the experience for our customers.
Much of the renovation work relates to changerooms. Will there be adequate changing facilities available during this time?
We will have alternative changerooms and toilet facilities at both our venues. These may require a short walk. We will have signage up at our venues to direct you to the alternative changerooms / toilets.
Where will parent and baby lessons run while the Program Pool (Wellness Suite) is closed at Riverton Leisureplex?
While the Program Pool at Riverton is closed, all parent and baby classes (Little Water Bubs to Tots 2) will be relocated to the Leisure Pool. Rest assured, the Leisure Pool will be kept at a comfortable, warm temperature for the classes. Closer to the date, the exact location of your swimming lesson will be available through the online parent portal.
How will memberships be affected during this period?
We will strive to keep disruption to a minimum. However, there will be times when areas will be closed. For example, the Wellness Suite at Riverton will close between early February and mid-June.
Affected members will have the option to change or suspend their membership for a period of time during the renovation works, at no cost.
Changes in memberships must be made in writing and emailed to leisureplex@canning.wa.gov.au. Learn how to suspend your membership.
It is at your own discretion should you choose to continue using your membership to access areas unaffected by planned works. There will be no compensation offered during this period.
How can I stay up to date on the renovations and closures?
The City will send out regular communication to keep customers informed of the progress of the works, including current and pending closures. Please keep an eye on your emails, as well as social media and the screens at our venues to stay up to date.
