City of Canning residents can nominate and celebrate their local community heroes with nominations for the Auspire – Australia Day Council Western Australia, Community Citizen of the Year Awards now open.

The Community Citizen of the Year Awards gives us the opportunity to celebrate the positive impact of individuals and groups who are engaged and committed to our local area. Whether they are a nominee or recipient, we can all celebrate outstanding contributions, because we’re all part of the story.

Recognising local heroes for more than 20 years, the Awards are made up of four categories:
• Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals over 16 years)
• Young Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals aged 16-30 years)
• Senior Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals aged 65 years and over)
• Active Citizenship (for community groups or events)

Nominations can be made for contributions to education, health, fundraising, voluntary services, business, sports, arts, the environment, social inclusion or any other area that enhances the wellbeing of our community. For the full criteria, visit www.citizenshipawards.com.au/criteria.

Mayor Patrick Hall encourages the Canning community to get involved and nominate a local hero.

“Last year we had 24 nominees, it would be great to see even more of our local community heroes nominated and recognised for their outstanding contributions.

“We are proud to support the Community Citizen of the Year Awards and look forward to celebrating our winners as a part of our Australia Day Family Fun Day celebrations on 26 January 2025,” said Mayor Patrick Hall.

New research from Auspire, supports the presence of community award programs for the social, cultural and economic impact they make.

In a survey of 2024 recipients, 85% of respondents said the Awards encourage active citizenship, with 91% believing that they are a great way to recognise leaders. Furthermore, 86% of respondents agree that the Awards make communities more inclusive.

Nominations for the 2025 Community Citizen of the Year Awards are now open until 31 October 2024 and can be submitted at www.citizenshipawards.com.au/nominate.

The City of Canning is proud to deliver the Community Citizen of the Year Awards, in partnership with Auspire and Joint Patrons His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson AC APM Governor of Western Australia, and Mrs Darrilyn Dawson.
